There are certain ideas in the world such as of truth , non violence , equality , fraternity & brotherhood , sanity , purity and many more to which there is a universal acceptance cutting across all boundaries such as region,religion,race,caste,creed & nation. This acceptance remains universal till it is in the form of an idea.Once these are practiced there is always a view and counter view (often called to be the opposite view) to the practice of it. It loses the universality of acceptance.

Perhaps it is this point where we look for maximum acceptance generally termed to be consensus.
Democracy the large accepted form of governance across the world today prefers to derive/arrive consensus on almost all the issues. Democracy also proclaims to work for the larger good. It shall be,though, a matter of debate whether the derived/arrived consensus is conscious or not. Or the consensus formed on an issue is going to serve a larger good. Parliamentary democracy provides the forum and the way for it i.e. through debate at the floor of house.
This winter session Indian Parliament session is though in progress yet at halt. Reason being the opposition wants debate under rule 193 and BJP the ruling party refuses it though enjoying absolute majority in Lok Sabha.Opposition enjoys majority in Rajya Sabha. The speaker of both the houses are adjourning the house since a week or more on demonetization.
Definitely each political party of both the houses have a valid point to speak on demonetization. At least here seems a consensus.
Then what is stopping the speaker for debate. My little mind says it is ego and revenge.
I am afraid if the political institutions (Read political parties and Parliament) have such silly reason such as under which rule the debate should take place, for not reaching the consensus.
How the democracy will get practiced in a family which is the smallest unit of institution in our society. After all it is the Indian families only getting mirrored in the parliament.
Be scared.

In a nutshell,
ReplyDeleteThe issue lies not in the problem ,but to the approach of solution. And ironically people doesn't want a stage for debate but for elocution and expecting a mock Surender of the opponent.
Need of the hour is not consensus but a basic common sense about what they are meant for, as a member of house.
Worlds greatest fantasy is that my truth is the only truth.
